INSTAGRAM AND OOTD's - BECAUSE GETTING DRESSED IS A RITUAL

(Because details are meant to be subtle. They should be noticed and not gawked at - Zac Posen. Follow me on Instagram)
Sometimes, something as superficial as picking a good outfit will actually have profound repercussion on your well being.  Believe me, getting dress is a ritual.

NOTHING BUT SQUARZI

Unique, casual and deconstructed, Alessandro Squarzi, founder and director of the namesake showroom and consultancy in Bologna, is arguably the master of Italian sprezz and never looks short of sartorial.
Arguably the most iconic street style subject in Italy, this man adores Solaro fabric, cotton, vintage, Ralph Lauren, and a well-polished pair of shoes.
“Shopping rituals? I tend to buy whatever excites me.” With Squarzi, it is never something pre-planned. I think that’s all that really needs to be said.

RIBBON BELTS, STRIPES AND A DOSE OF PAUL & SHARK

The summer polo season finally closes with Global Port Polo Cup and Paul and Shark Polo Cup at the grand and well-manicured 6-hectare Enrique Zobel field.

With a touch of formality - long flowy dresses that suggest the wind on the grasslands and pale blue, red, pink and white linen trousers paired with their favorite suede gommino’s, espadrilles, penny loafers and K. Jacques, were a favorite worn by the spectators.

Aside from Last Sunday’s match between Santi Elizalde’s team black and Sonny Borromeo’s team white, experience still triumphed over promise and Elizalde’s team took the laurels for the day.

On a lighter note, please save outlandish toppers for dia de los muertos and the Kentucky Derby. Can we all just look like Nacho Figueras?!

OUT FOR A WEEK

I’m currently out for the week (my first since May last year) to visit my mom who’s been on dialysis for 3 weeks now.
(Trousers and pink oxford shirt from Ralph Lauren, Green tote from J. Crew and my reliable penny loafers.)
Rewind: I get that there’s a science to packing light, but I think it’s getting a bit over the top when Pythagoras starts giving you specific instructions on how to properly pack your basics. And no, please don’t fold my delicates!  Time for 15 minutes of ardha sarvangasana.

ON A PLAID NOTE

“Style is knowing who you are and what works for you” - Frank Muytjens

Spot on!  I have always been a big fan of Frank Muytjens, J. Crew’s menswear design genius. Like him, I like to keep things understated with a hint of heritage. I like old things like mi padre and mi abuelito’s old classics – the usual gingham, plaid and oxford.
(Uniform dressing at the luxury carpet factory- Navy trousers, micro check shirt from Steven Alan and my trusty loafers. To get my look, see image below)

Mad for plaid? When was I never? Despite being a huge trend last year, the perfect pattern still matter. Like your favorite basic white dress shirt, the plaid shirt is an anchor for every man’s wardrobe, complimenting your trusty blazer may it be navy or khakisolid pullovers and yes, chinos on weekends; seriously, choose wisely – there’s too much of it right now.

A couple of my closet staples in plaid are from J. Crew, Club Monaco, Orvis, Ralph Lauren and Steven Alan. Oh, the joy of plaid paired with chinos, bare ankles, red socks, penny loafers, boat shoes and wingtips –  please stop me from drooling.

IF CLASSY GIRLS WEAR PEARLS, REAL MEN PLAY WITH PRINTS

Having a few months off from an emotional roller coaster has been really good (less social events, soirees, mid-week sessions at my usual watering hole and more me time at home with my schnauzer), Typhoon Trami-triggered heavy monsoon rains shutting down my city, flooding almost all streets, braving muddy Luneta Park at the million people march in Luneta, a protest in the Philippines calling for the abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund caused by the Priority Development Assistance Fund Scam -  I feel refreshed and inspired again.
(New shirts and new fabrics - if classy girls wear pearls, real men play with prints! Where's Kiel James Patrick when I need him?)

My ghost months were just as hard as choosing whether I’d wear my gingham Ralph Lauren Yarmouth  shirt in pink or my blue plaid Thomas Masonfor J Crew shirt to work. Do you know what's completely brilliantly awesome? I have been painting again on weekends – oh, the joy, the exultation!

I'm picking myself up again from where I left off. New shirts, wardrobe makeover, a few new pairs of lace-ups and loafers in suede and leather and yes, new fabrics for my couch and new coral printed pillows from the
Rockwell Bazaar over the weekend. Think Jonathan Adler with a pinch of Martha Stewart (hahaha!)Currently watching: Night Train to Lisbon (Jeremy Iron, why on Earth do you remind me of someone else!).

BRIGHT YOUNG THING

It’s all about confidence – high five to that! Many are mentally confined to simply wearing either navy, gray, black and khaki trousers - liven up your wardrobe with basic Nantucket reds.
I rarely see anyone wear them here (rarely meaning, only my friend Leif-Erik ). Like trousers in lilac, powder blue, salmon and canary yellow, red trousers are literally a staple piece in most stylish mens' wardrobe and definitely not a trend) and it’s appealing to see just how put together one can get when they just give it a shot. Note to self, they should be cut slim not skinny and never baggy. And oh, I like mine with a quarter to zero break – I just can’t stand looking sloppy
(Myself in J. Press trousers and plaid shirt from McNeal at Fonsies 60's birthday. I can't be a hippie, i will always be preppy haha)
Looking for one? There’s always Ralph Lauren, J. Press, Club Monaco and Murray’s Toggery Shop.

BIRTHDAY AND CUPCAKES

Good friends, bunnies and unicorns were part  of the beautiful set in lilac, pink, lime and lavender who came out to celebrate the Bag Hag’s 25th (she claims) birthday at the Vanilla Cupcake Bakery.

Imagine Lilly Pulitzer, Martha Stewart and Ralph Lauren in wonderland. Alice definitely was in Mary Katranzou

ROLLIN LIKE A BOSS

Thanks to the country’s record economic growth, iconic British luxury vehicle brand Rolls-Royce has finally come to the Philippines. Fast forwards and a couple of glasses of cranberry cognac and champagne after, I just found out the Rolls-Royce Ghost on display for P25.9 million has been bought on the spot by Willie Revillame. Ok, I think my jaw and my man boobs just dropped. haha
(At last night’s launch: myself in a bespoke black suit from Yuen’s, Striped green dress shirt from Ralph Lauren and Fratelli Rossetti black calf cap-toe lace-ups. Ingrid and her Papillon leather twisted and knotted bag by Bally – beautiful! )
And oh, I think I was the only non-Chinese in the crowd aside from Victor Aliwalas hahaha. Anyway, where on earth is my cheese fondue?

WOOSTER DRESSING: ON THE PERFECT FIT AND THE RIGHT CUT

For someone who doesn’t fit the usual Asian build like me, buying something off-the-rack - unless in Europe or North America - isn’t really the best option.

I have learned to accept the fact that I will never be stick-thin to fit into a minimalist Jil Sander suit or a shrunken Thom Browne but hey, I look good in Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren.

Growing up having a go-to tailor has made life easy for dad and myself. I mean, not because nothing looked good on us – we just like things our way from the right cut to the right break.

Photobucket
( I have always been a fan of street style star, Nick Wooster. His personal style is just spot on!)

Finding the right tailor isn’t always easy. First, you should always need to know what to ask for. I know a couple of guys who know too much terminology, bordering on menswear know-it-all, also known as that cuckoo asshole but if you don’t know your body well enough, you’ll still look like a boxy Lego figure or worse, Gumby.

Photobucket
(His suits are tailored to perfection!)

Make sure you know how a suit is supposed to fit, and find a tailor you trust to get it there. I have had my share of impulsive bespoke suits from who someone swore was the best – guess what, I never wore it despite 5 alterations.

Photobucket
(Madras blazer in pure perfection - I drool!)

To bespoke virgins, here’s what to look and ask for the next time you get suited up. Trust me, it’ll be orgasmic!

1.Suits now are snugger in the shoulders and more fitted. Take note, fitter suits doesn’t mean it has to be tight.

2.Your jacket sleeve should be no lower than your wrist bone but high enough for a quarter to half-inch of your shirtsleeve to show when you move your arm.

4.Though a lot of designers are doing shorter styles lately, the ideal length hasn’t changed. I’m all for the classic cut!

5.Pant legs shouldn’t be loose nor boxy and yes, no pleats please!

6.Sartorial conservatives like me prefer no break at all but for a virgin like you, slight break wouldn’t hurt.

7.And yes, never trust a local designer who will charge you an arm and a leg for are-tagged pseudo bespoke suit. That’s just plain gross!

And oh, if you insist wearing a silk suit during daytime, here’s a rope and a pole. I won’t stop you from hanging yourself.

LOVE, TRUNKS AND GETTING THAT EXTRA TAN

My closet is filled with almost all things preppy – yes, even my beach shorts. Mom would even wonder why most of them are in pink, purple, lime and of course, red. I mean, hey, don’t blame me if I look pretty good in them! Though I only go to Ralph Lauren, Speedo and Vilebrequin, I have discovered Love Brand & Co. to be not at all bad! Photobucket Set up only last year by Oliver Tomalin, a young English designer, this new socially responsible lifestyle brand promises to expand through a series of ready-to-wear products, each intrinsically dedicated to a relevant charity. Photobucket Photobucket The first, ‘Trunks for Trunks’ (swimming trunks for endangered Asian elephants) was inspired and motivated by the plight of the iconic animal. He saw a great opportunity to help the Elephant Family in a credible and savvy way, by creating his superbly designed collection of state of the art men's swim. Impressive! Photobucket And the best thing about this SS12 collection - it has a classic European cut like all my weekend shorts and loosely tailored for a stylish and comfortable fit. I should be wearing one this weekend at Tali but damnit, I might as well just keep my mouth shut. I need a tan!

RED AND GOOD FRIDAY

Bright colors are fun and a pair of serious assertive colors is all you need.

Photobucket

(Used to neutrals like this dark corridor? Go electric one piece at a time like this brightly colored door in turquoise.)

Yes, it is pretty obvious I love my reds and you do not have to be on the beach or a yacht to get colorful.

Photobucket
(Crank up the brightness on Good Friday! Red shorts and bengal shirt in blue by Ralph Lauren, tan loafers and hat from a flea market in Florence, Italy.)

In fact, here I am doing my penance in red on Good Friday.

DEFINITELY NOT A STABLE BUT CLOSE ENOUGH

I might have gone a bit (well, not really) overboard on dressing up for the farm.

Photobucket
(plaid shirt from Brooks Brothers, cut off navy shorts from Ralph Lauren, flip flops from Massimo Dutti and hat from my dads closet.)

I mean, I don't really get to country it up very often, so made the most of the occasion since I only fly down south once a year.

HAIL TO THE RED,WHITE AND BLUE

I have long been a fan of seersucker and red short trousers.

Being the official fabric of summer (Lucky it feels like summer all year round in the tropics), these short trousers, when worn with a classic solid pique shirt or button down brings oomph to any outfit.
Photobucket
I recently got myself a pair of extremely lightweight red and seersucker short trousers from Ralph Lauren and guess what, they are definitely one of the best hot weather options - think country club chic.

I have always believed that being sloppy is never an option. Beat the heat by cutting it short (just right above the knees).

Of course, no summer look would be complete without a pair of espadrilles, plimsolls and loafers.

UNUSUAL WEEKEND PREPSTER

Despite me wearing my white shirts to death and making sure my mum and our house help doesn't throw it out when I am not looking, I also love my perfectly-cut plaid shirts even before they became a craze.

Photobucket
Photobucket
(Don't fear the tailor. I am definitely having my new shirts altered the first thing I get up tomorrow)

Thanks to Kwannam Chu’s post on Rugger by Gant last Thursday, I ended buying four dress shirts at Ralph Lauren and another white linen shirt just to find out, all 5 needed to be brought to Mang Jojo for alteration but again, a bargain is a bargain.

Photobucket
Photobucket
(Salmon pink linen summer shirt also from Ralph Lauren)

Maybe I should start taking all the money I spent on shorts, shirts and trousers and buy a plane ticket to Europe.
